
Naadam is the traditional festival in the country, which is celebrated nationwide all over the country. Since the revolution in 1921 the festival has been organized in the honor of the victory of Mongolian people’s revolution but Mongolians have celebrated it for thousands of years. The three manly games, wrestling, archery and horse race, were considered to be the essential skills that men should possess. In ancient times, every man was warrior and they needed to obtain these abilities to defeat the enemies.
The wrestling was originally a game to test the strength and wit but some resources say it was initially aimed to train young kids to tame and domesticate wild animals. The horse is not only the main means of transport and man’s best friend, but also served as a symbol of power, strength and loyalty. Hence the skill to ride horse in fastest speed was one of the musts that a man should possess. In ancient times the ability to shoot with a bow and arrow was highly valued as it was the main weapon for hunting and war battles. Through the historical development, those three manly games grew into sport and specially trained men of high skills compete making the events ore competitive and interesting.
The Naadam is celebrated annually during July 11-13 and small Naadams at the local sums /smallest administrative unit/ and provinces are followed. Each year, over 35 thousand wrestlers, 40 thousands horses and 1500 archers compete in Naadams throughout the country. The main naadam festival held in Ulaanbaatar is the biggest one attended by the state governors where the nine white the government house of the Central Stadium and the president official opens the festival followed by folk song, music and dance performance. The winners of the Three Manly Games are given state are given titles by the decree of the President of Mongolia.
